Rescheduled Political Education Series: What a Socialist Tax and Financial System Could Look Like
Rescheduled Political Education Series: What a Socialist Tax and Financial System Could Look Like May 29, 2026 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
More Info and RSVP: https://actionnetwork.org/events/political-education-series-wealth-inequality-and-the-tax-system-what-a-socialist-tax-and-financial-system-could-look-like Description: In our first session we named the problem. Tonight we talk about what to do about it. Join us for Meeting 2 of our Political Education series on wealth inequality and the tax system, developed in collaboration with the Political Education Committee and the Finance Committee. This session builds on what we covered in Meeting 1 and turns toward solutions. We will be exploring solutions across three time horizons: Short term: Changes we can fight for now, including IRS reform, estimated tax relief for seasonal and gig workers, community organizing, and public education campaigns grounded in the Maine context. Mid term: Bigger systemic reforms, including closing corporate tax loopholes, taxing the wealthy and their accumulated assets, ending contractor misclassification, and decoupling benefits from employment. Long term: What a genuinely socialist tax and economic system could look like; from universal public health care and guaranteed income to worker ownership, cooperative economics, and democratic control over public resources. We will look at what that vision means concretely for Maine's fishing, farming, trades, and seasonal workforce. We are excited to welcome guest speakers Mark S and John F, who will help ground the discussion in real-life impacts and practical next steps for Maine workers and organizers. Each section will close with facilitated discussion questions. Come ready to think, share, and organize. This event is open to all members and curious community members. If you missed Meeting 1, you are still welcome, and no prior attendance is required. This is a hybrid event. Join us in person at the Maine DSA office (address shared with registered attendees 24 hours before the event) or online via Zoom (link provided upon registration). Mask Policy: If this event is in-person and you would like this to be a masked event, please contact a Maine DSA Accessibility Officer at accessibility@mainedsa.org at least 3 days ahead of time.
